APS - 15 October 2021

ALGIERS- A show of dances and songs of the Algerian repertoire was presented Thursday evening, in Algiers, by the Ballet of Algiers Opera and Ahellil ensemble, as part of the official opening of the cultural year 2021-2022.

Hosted at the Algiers Opera Boualem Bessaih, the cultural year 2021-2022 kicked off in the presence of Minister of Culture and Arts Wafaa Chaalel, several members of the government and top officials of several State's institutions, as well as about twenty representatives of the different diplomatic missions accredited in Algeria.

A highly aesthetic anthropological immersion was proposed during this inaugural evening through "Roots," a series of narrative choreographic dances designed and directed by Fatma Zohra Namous Senouci and sonfs of Ahellil, an emblematic musical and poetic genre of the Zenata of Gourara, inscribed in 2008 by the UNESCO on the Representatives List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Before a relatively large audience, sixteen ballerinas and eleven dancers presented five dances, namely Karkabou, Reguibettes, Touaregs, Chaoui and Kabylie, while about twenty members of the chorus of Ahellil company performed some spiritual pieces, celebrating the purity of soul, in harmony with its creator.

Warmly applauded by the audience, the dance show "Roots" and the songs Ahellil were produced by the Opera of Algiers, under the aegis of the Ministry of Culture and Arts.
