Djamaa el Djazair, one of best architectural designs in world in 2021

ALGIERS- The Great Mosque of Algiers "Djamaa el Djazair" has been chosen among the best architectural designs in the world in 2021 after winning the annual award of the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design and the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies, US Embassy in Algiers announced on Sunday.

The US embassy extended, on this occasion, its warmest congratulations to Algeria for winning this prize awarded by the Chicago Athenaeum in order to improve knowledge and public awareness about design and architectural arts.

The mosque is the biggest in Africa and the third largest in the world, after Al-Haram Mosque in Mecca and Al-Nabawi Mosque in Medina.

Constituting a real religious, cultural and scientific attractive centre, "Djamaa El Djazair" is distinguished at the international level by its minaret, the tallest in the world (267 meters long) and its prayer hall (20,000 m2) that could receive up to 120,000 faithful.

Built over an area of 27.75 hectares in the commune of Mohammadia, Djamaa El Djazaïr comprises 12 independent buildings, including a large library containing one million books and able to receive 3,500 people.
