Study-day on green hydrogen to take place on 19 April, announces Chitour

APS - 14 April 2021

ALGIERS-The Minister of Energy Transition and Renewable Energy Chems Eddine Chitour announced Tuesday that study-on green hydrogen bringing together all stakeholders would take place on 19 April in Algiers.

A "hydrogen hub for Algeria" will be created at this event in addition to the establishment of a hydrogen plan "like all developed" countries, said Chitour.

Calling the event "very important", Chitour stressed that Algeria "seeks to be part of the green hydrogen revolution and is willing to mobilize all means for this purpose."

According to the minister, the Renewable Energy Research Center (CDER) and researchers in hydrogen will attend this event.

The participants will draw Algeria's strategy in the field of hydrogen for which a funding request will be submitted to the Government, said the same official.

Algeria will request financing from international institutions, notably the United Nations (UN), which work on mitigating the impact of climate change, he continued, stressing that hydrogen development is part of sustainable development that targets non-dependence on fossil energy.

With natural reserves decreasing sharply by 2030, hydrogen will be the natural source in the future, said Chitour.

Hydrogen will be Algeria's natural gas as from 2030; hence the need to start working on this target from now, affirmed the minister.

In order to implement Algeria's hydrogen strategy, we must strive to get funding as soon as possible, especially as Europe forecasts needs amounting to 80,000 GW in 2030, he continued.

Algeria has long supplied Europe with natural gas and will do so with hydrogen, said Chitour.

Hydrogen is used in fuel cells that power vehicles and in green petrochemicals, said the minister.
