2017 "should be the year of decisions" to resolve Libya crisis

APS - 07 January 2017

ALGIERS- The year 2017 "should be the year of decisions" to reach a solution to the crisis that has been shaking Libya for many years, the UN Secretary-General's special representative to Libya, Martin Kobler, said Saturday in Algiers.

The UN official, who emphasized the need to "progress politically" on the issue, underlined, in a press briefing following his discussions with Minister of Maghreb Affairs, African Union and Arab League Abdelkader Messahel, "the situation of permanent crisis in Libya, where people are suffering."

He insisted on the necessity to restore security and stability in Libya, stressing the "key role of neighbouring countries, especially Algeria, in the search for a solution to the crisis in that country."

Kobler praised the fact that the United Nations and Algeria "are working together on the Libyan issue," deeming it "very important" to get such a "convergence of views" and "total harmony" to restore peace and security in that country.
