Information society: Algeria moves up nine positions in ITU 2016 ranking

ALGERIA-Algeria has moved up nine positions in the 2016 ICT Development Index (IDI) ranking released by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU).

Algeria moved up to the 103rd position with a 4.4 points IDI value while it ranked 112th in the 2015 ranking with a 3.74 IDI value, the report of this ITU "Measuring the information society" report  released Tuesday in Gaborone (Botswana).   

According to the ranking, Algeria is the third county "most dynamic" country in the world after Myanmar and Saint Kitts and Nevis, which managed to improve their ranking since last year. Saint Kitts and Nevis moved up 20 position and Myanmar 13 positions.   

In addition to Myanmar and Bhutan, Algeria is among the countries that make "significant progress" in the development of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), said the UN body.  

These "very dynamic" countries have recorded relatively high levels of subscriptions to mobile telephony and Internet. The penetration rate of mobile telephony in Algeria was close to 100% in 2015, according to the ITU.
