Guterres hails Algeria's key, positive role in North Africa and Sahel

ALGIERS-The United Nations (UN) Secretary General, Antonio Guterres hailed the key and positive role of Algeria in North Africa and the Sahel region, stressing his full support to its efforts and initiatives,the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Sunday in a statement.

During his meeting Saturday in New York with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, Ramtane Lamamra, on the sidelines of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly, "the two officials discussed the developments of the situation in the region, including Algeria's efforts to promote peaceful solutions to the crisis in Libya, Mali and the Sahel-Sahara region," said the source.

The meeting also focused on "the challenges facing the decolonization process in Western Sahara and ways to revive the UN efforts to resume negotiations between the two parties to the conflict, the Kingdom of Morocco and the Polisario Front, and achieve a solution that guarantees the inalienable right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination and independence in accordance with the relevant UN resolutions," the statement said.

"The UN Secretary General welcomed the continued efforts of Algeria for peace and stability in North Africa and the Sahel region, stressing his full support for its efforts and initiatives," said the Ministry.
