NEW YORK- The United Nations Commission on the Status of Women congratulated Tuesday Algeria for its co-facilitator role in the adoption by consensus of the political declaration celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Declaration and Action Plan of Beijing.
Algeria was congratulated, alongside Australia, by chairman of the Commission, member States and observers as well as executive director of UN-Women.
The UN Commission wrapped up Tuesday, in New York, its 64th session, after a suspension of its works in March because of the spread of coronavirus pandemic.
The political declaration was dubbed "ambitious and holistic" by the document stakeholders, emphasizing the progress made in the implementation of Beijing Declaration and establishing a series of commitments that the member States agreed to implement, notably in the fields of education, health, fight against violence against women, the participation of women in the political and public life in order to achieve gender equality and women's empowerment.
Participating in the works of this session, Algeria's permanent representative to the United Nations, ambassador Sofiane Mimouni, thanked the commission's president, the members of the office and all the delegations as well as UN-Women for their efforts and role in the conclusion of this commission's works.
