Massacres of 17 October 1961: President Tebboune pays tribute to Revolution Martyrs

ALGIERS- President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Sunday paid tribute to the martyrs of the Algerian Revolution (1954-1962) marking the commemoration of the massacres of 17 October 1961 in Paris, at the Shrine of the Martyr in Algiers.

After greeting a detachment of the Republican Guard who rendered him military honours, President Tebboune laid a wreath at the foot of the commemorative stele and recited Al Fatiha, the first chapter of the Holy Qur'an, in memory of the martyrs.

The commemorative ceremony took place in the presence of the speaker of the Council of the Nation (upper house of Parliament), Salah Goudjil, the speaker of the People’s National Assembly (lower house of Parliament), Brahim Boughali, Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Aïmene Benabderrahmane, the Chief of Staff of the People’s National Army, Lieutenant General Said Chanegriha, members of the government and senior State officials.

During this commemorative ceremony, President Tebboune exchanged remarks with former mujahideen (national liberation war veterans) and members of the revolutionary family, including those of the French Federation of the National Liberation Front.

On Saturday, President Tebboune ordered the observation of a minute of silence, on October 17th of each year at 11 am across the national territory, in memory of the martyrs of the massacres of 17 October 1961 in Paris.
